Created by Joe Liles—inaugural instructor of the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics—this limited edition print in “NCSSM blue” reproduces his original pen-and-ink drawing, which was executed in worldwide celebration of NASA’s Artemis II 10-day mission.
This image—featuring Liles’ signature linework—honors astronaut Christina Koch (NCSSM Class of ’97), who became the first woman to fly to the Moon. Koch’s journey powerfully evoked the core ethos of NCSSM, serving as an inspiring reminder to push beyond boundaries and accept the greater challenge. Among the many mission-critical responsibilities of Koch, who studied art under Liles, was photographing the far side of the Moon in unprecedented detail.
Net proceeds from sales of this print edition support NCSSM student-artists through the Joe Liles Fine Arts Endowment, directly paying for visual art supplies and other essential studio needs at no cost to them or the institution.
PLEASE NOTE: As of 8/1/26 this is a pre-sale of the first 50 prints from the edition of 100. The artist is traveling in August 2026, so these first 50 prints will be produced while he is gone, and then they will be hand-signed, dated, and numbered by him at the beginning of September. After that they will ship in mid-September to their new owners. After the first 50 prints from the edition of 100 are sold, the final 50 will be produced (and signed, dated, and numbered). After the 100th print, this edition will end. All prints are sold unframed and will fit standard 13 × 13 inch frames. Each print is accompanied by a card detailing its cataloging and explaining the origin of this image.
ADDITIONALLY: A limited quantity of the signed, dated, and numbered prints from the edition of 100 will be held back and available for sale in-person on Saturday, October 17 2026 at the Alumni Weekend on the NCSSM Durham campus as part of a special event. Details to follow.
